A.A. Wright is a public middle school in America with a mission stated as, “Our mission at A. A. Wright Public School is to assure the healthy development of every child so that each child has the knowledge, skills and resiliency to be successful in a rapidly changing world.”. They made it clear that the school concerns on the behavior of their students along with their skills to become a better person after residing on their school.
Because of the huge number of youth gamblers in the world, the students of A.A. Wright were given a fruitful lesson about gambling. They were taught of what is gambling and the disadvantages of being connected and addicted to the said activity. Most of the students who were concerned on taking up fake casino playing were students from grade 6, 7 and 8. Brought by the lessons were the risks of gambling, the consequences on playing once and the strategies on how to avoid gambling at early age.
Though the mock or fake casino was conducted to teach the students about the disadvantages and risks of the gambling, still the kids experienced a bit of gambling. Because of this, an outreach worker for youth named Michelle Parks stated that this activity is good for them on the idea of teaching the students on how to gamble safe if they decided to be a gambler. Also, she stated, "Today is about showing them the effects gambling too much can do”.
The Wallaceburg YMCA Skills Link participants arranged the mock casino activity and the same time hosted it. With the help of Wallaceburg YMCA Skills Link Youth Employment Program, the YMCA of Sarnia-Lambton and The Youth Gambling Awareness Program Advisory Committee, the discussion was a success. Some of the betting games taught on the kids were roulette, blackjack, poker, horse betting and beat the dealer. Among these, poker and blackjack are common for an addictive casino game.
These youth participants whom the discussion was made for are applicable to taking a part on this mock casino for some of them already involved in gambling. There is no doubt about their participation on this kind of activity because almost 90 percent of the youth is engaged with some gambling behavior and about 15 percent of them are experiencing gambling problem.
Parks also noted that, "This isn't something new. Gambling is really normalized in our society. These kids are growing up knowing a lot about gambling". As soon as possible these kids must know the most effective information about gambling.
The YMCA Youth Gambling Awareness Program couldn't be possible if it isn't funded by the Ministry of Health Promotion to re-new the youth's view in gambling. At the end on the day, the participants would realize that this mock casino was to teach them, the students who gambling is not the right way to make an easy money, plus gambling is just for fun and entertainment.
